Andy Munter has been the owner of Backwoods Mountain Sports, a nordic, camping, water sports, and bike shop in Ketchum since 1983. Backwoods has always been a community leader in efficient lighting and heating, recycling, and supporting a wide range of environmental and social causes in the region and state. He has been on the board of Idaho Rivers United, a statewide river and salmon conservation group for 16 years including 8 years as president. He was on the founding committee to “Save Galena” as it transitioned from private ownership to the Blaine County Rec District which also became the organizational and grooming entity for the entire North Valley Trails system. And a few years later he served on the skiers group that negotiated with the valleys snow machine group to provide quality recreation in the valley for both groups. He is also on the board of the Boulder Mountain Tour committee which is a 501c3 whose mission it is to support nordic skiing and nordic skiing lifestyle year round by running the BMT race, the nordic festival and promoting Ketchum as “Nordic town USA.” He has been involved in numerous wilderness, water and other land use issues for over thirty years and believes a healthy, wild environment and multiple outdoor recreation opportunities are necessary for a high functioning community and a robust economy.
